APPROACH WALLS — OLMSTED, ILLINOIS

This unique project featured construction of several floating approach walls for the new Olmsted Dam on the Ohio River. The walls are actually concrete “pontoons” up to 350 ft. long each which were built in a dry graving yard 50 miles upstream from the project then towed to the job. We constructed temporary levees on the river and surrounding the entire site then dug a lagoon adjacent to the laydown yard in order to flood the entire area to make the pontoons float. When the approach walls were freed from their bases, we removed the levee on the river side and they were taken upstream.
